The award is given annually to an organization that has given the most to the state’s international trade capabilities due to the quality of the service and commitment. Polish Ocean Lines has provided services to the state and has grown into a major international carrier.

The Morehead City Port Committee is working to obtain money for the deepening of the Morehead City Harbor. The harbor deepening project has been in progress since 1984, and is important to future growth at the Morehead City port facility. Deepening would allow the port to accommodate larger, deeper draft vessels, cutting the cost per ton shipping rate.

For over a decade, Star Shipping Inc., has been providing service to customers of the North Carolina ports, primarily companies involved in the forest products trade. In 1992, Star Shipping was ranked as the largest breakbulk carrier calling the North Carolina Ports, in terms of both number of vessels and volume of cargo. Star also ships more than half of the total volume of wood pulp, the state’s single largest export commodity.

The North Carolina State Ports Authority at Wilmington has the largest capacity port-owned crane in the South Atlantic and is versatile in its operation. The existence of a private export packing company at the port in Wilmington also offers a flexibility to project shippers not found at other ports. A variety of industry and expertise give the port dimensional cargo capabilities.

On July 15, 1993, Amazon Lines Limited from east coast South America began services to the North Carolina State Ports Authority’s Morehead City Terminal. Amazon Lines was attracted to Morehead City by the prospects of imported lumber for the North Carolina furniture industry. The company also brings spices, cocoa produces, frozen seafood and nuts from the Amazon region of Brazil.

North Carolina State Ports Authority is preparing a quality management program and arranging to obtain ISO-9000 certification, a series of standards for quality management. Since many of North Carolina’s customers and shipping companies are ISO-9000 certified, incorporating the same standards and quality management programs will correspond operations.
