One of the most debated issues in Congress has been increasing postal rates. In an effort to improve service while decreasing cost and deficits of the Post Office, adequate rates are required. However, the basic issue raised over post rate increases was who would bear the cost of operation and increases in rates. Many argue that as a public service, the Post Office Department should not be a business, and operating costs should come from other sources.

Vance, Granville, and Warren counties in North Carolina are sporting new looks with the creation of a 51,200 acre lake behind John H. Kerr Dam. The 800 mile shoreline of the lake straddles the North Carolina-Virginia line, and what once was farm land is now brimming with bass, catfish, ducks, and geese. Kerr Lake is now open year round for boating, swimming, fishing, and other outdoor recreational activities.

There were more live births in this year than in any year previously recorded, setting an all time record for the state. Additionally, an overall decrease in the number of deaths from all causes was also reported. Main causes of death however, were cancer, heart disease, and apoplexy.
