A familiar sight on expressways from Boston to New Orleans are the black and orange insignia on the trucks of Thru-Way J--the Johnson Motor Lines System. The trucks of the Charlotte-based motor carrier shuttle between the south and north, carrying tons of goods to feed the nation's economy. In just 16 years the company has gone from doing less that $400,000 worth of business annually to exceeding $24 million, with 35 terminals and 9200 miles through 16 states.

Over half of the employees own stock in the B.B. Walker Shoe Company, their holdings being considerably larger than that of the management. The result has been strong incentive for increased production, product quality, and sales. From meager beginnings in 1947, the company now boasts over $8.5 million in sales, and over 600 employees produce over 6,000 pairs of shoes a day.

For 1962, 307 expansions of existing industries and 150 new plants were announced in North Carolina. New and expanded industries in the state resulted in a combined capital investment of $192,638,000, employment of more than 20,600 people, and a payroll of over $66 million.

Based on figures from the North Carolina Board of Higher Education, 1962 fall registration in North Carolina's higher education institutes showed a 7.45% overall increase above the previous year. With the addition of 5603 new students, the college-going population in North Carolina reached a new high of over 80800 students, 60000 North Carolina residents.

An annual increase of $30 million in requests has been made by the North Carolina State Board of Education to the Advisory Budget Commission for the improvement of public education. Of this increase, $22 million was requested for the nine month school fund for distribution of the local unites, and the remaining $8 million requested for various special programs.

Since 1956, the number of North Carolina citizens who are shareholders in American businesses has increased from 50,000 to 238,000. There was a nearly three-fold rise in shareowner population in the District during this time period, 1.2 million persons from all backgrounds owning stock in one or more of the nation's 6300 publicly held corporations.

The Oratorio Singers of Charlotte, North Carolina began its organization in 1951, composed of people from all walks of life with a single passion--singing. The group has now achieved nation-wide attention and acclaim, directed by Donald Plott, Chairman of the Music Department at Davidson College. The group of singers performs not only in Charlotte and the surrounding region, but has also been seen and heard on radio and television.

New products, applications and improved variations on established materials have stimulated the home buyer and builder in recent years. In North Carolina, an industry-wide effort--Horizon Home Program--was established in 1961 to help realize the goals of home builder cooperation to provide a better designed and built home to meet needs and desires.

A new engineering laboratory building is to be constructed on the Research Triangle Institute campus. The 20,000 square foot laboratory and office space will be named in honor of the late William Trent Ragland of Raleigh, founder, president, and board member of Superior Stone Company, a construction materials division on Martin Marietta Corporation, one of the nation's industrial leaders in aerospace, chemicals and construction.

Sunflower seeds are offering North Carolina farmers with a new source of income and agricultural diversity. The mountain and Piedmont regions of the state are ideal for sunflower production, with lower yields seen in the Coastal Plain. Yields of 1500 to 2000 pounds of seed per acre are expected under average conditions, providing a major component for bird feed or their oil.

Thanks to the gentle but effect control of the North Carolina Local Government Commission, local debt is also under control. The Commission is operated under the general administration as a division of the Treasurer Department and consists of nine members, including the State Treasurer.

North Carolina ranks twenty-third in the US in per capita tax burden when looking at per capita state only. When combining the state and local tax burden, North Carolina only ranked forty-fifth in all. It is estimated that with the extension of the sales tax to food and other formerly exempt items in 1963, North Carolina's ranking will increase.

State tax collections in both the Fifth Federal Reserve District and the nation, more than doubled in the ten years between 1952 and 1962. For North Carolina, sales taxes and gross receipts made up the majority of state tax collection, followed by individual income tax, licenses, corporation income, and property taxes.
