Neuse Riverkeeper Samantha Krop and Pamlico-Tar Riverkeeper Katey Zimmerman are with Sound Rivers, a local nonprofit that monitors and protects more than 12,000 square miles of two watersheds along the Neuse and Tar-Pamlico Rivers. Sound Rivers was founded in 1980-81.
River Forest Manor in Belhaven was constructed in 1899as a home for John Aaron Wilkinson, President of J.L. Roper Lumber Co. In 1933, the home was sold to the James Williams Hines family in 1933. In 1947, Anson Smith purchased the home for $50,000 and branded it River Forest Manor. The Smith family continued to own the home until 2014, when it was purchased by investors who kept it on its same venue.
