"Black bears draw attention and admiration of some in eastern N.C." Several factors noted for the abundance of black bears in North Carolina include mild winters, access to high protein crops, plentiful food in general aiding more offspring and large areas of uninhabited land. On the question ofblack bears being a human threat, fewer than 80 people have been killed by a black bear since 1900.
