"Ford Worthy is a southern gentleman raised in Washington Park, Washington during the 1920s--1930s. I know of no one else his age who can recreate their Washington childhood experiences in such detail. Ford married my cousin, the late Isabel Blount Carter Worthy, also of Washington. I met with him, his grandson Thomas Hester and my son Samuel, at his home in Raleigh shortly after his wife passed away in October 2021.--Sam Mordecai, Washington native" The article is in the form of an oral history interview.

Flatland Ag. Inc. was founded in Aurora in 2008. Owner Floyd Peed and sons starting farming onions in the 1990s. To make this a viable crop, they gained assistance from NC State University. Today, their red and yellow onions are shipped to northern states via assistance from L&M Marketing in Raleigh.

Forty years ago a fundamental change has taken place in the Neuse and Tar-Pamlico Rivers. Pollution had gotten to such a point in the Neuse River in particular that tourism and the housing market in the area were seeing sharp declines. Events culminated in 1989, when the river basin was declared commercially dead. With the work of "river keepers' an extensive program to reclaim the rivers was pursued. Recently in 2015, the Pamlico-Tar River Foundation and the Neuse River Foundation merged advocacies to become "Sound Rivers".

The city of Washington, N.C. recently completed a $3.4 million project updating underground infrastructure to its Main Street. workers replaced in some instances 50 and 100 year old storm-water drainage pipes. Currently, the watercraft industry employs 330 people in Beaufort County and accounts for a large portion of the county's tax base. it is likely shipbuilding was already in progress in Washington before its establishment in 1776. The city saw its first steamboat in 1835. To assist present industry needs, Beaufort County Schools are now offering boat building classes and Beaufort Community College is establishing a boat manufacturing program.
