In Sept. 1910, W. E. Whitmore of Scotland Neck was visiting family in Greenville. He was a Confederate veteran and during the Civil War was stationed near Red Banks Church, where two of his comrades were killed and one captured when on picket duty in attempting to prevent an advance of Federal troops on Greenville. He and R. R. Cotton were in the same company.

This 1795-96 diary was written by Gen. Samuel Simpson (1765-1830) son of Col. John Simpson and Elizabeth Hardee. It was found in a garret in his later residence at Fort Barnwell, Craven Co., NC and presented to the North Carolina Archives in 1880’s. There are several deaths and marriages mentioned:
Jan. 1795—John Moye Esq. died in Greenville
Jan. 28, 1795---George Falconer died
Jan. 28, 1795---Samuel Dudley died
Feb. 1, 1795---Robert Dixon died
July 2, 1795---Polly Moore married to James Brooks
Dec. 17, 1795---Sally Simpson married to Joseph Brickell
Jan. 3, 1796---John Barbers funeral
Jan. 3, 1796---Mrs. Walter Dixon’s funeral preached by Parson Blount

Died April 21, Nancy, wife of Richard Warren, died a month after giving birth.

In Sept. 1899, Will Sermons and two daughters of J. W. Smith, Superintendent of the County Home, were in a wagon being pulled by a mule. The mule suddenly ran away and one buggy wheel went through a ditch. Miss Nannie Smith was thrown out of the buggy and fell in the ditch. Her head caught between the spokes of the wheel, and when the mule pulled the wheel out of the ditch the young lady was pulled out by the neck. She survived the ordeal being badly bruised and skinned by the accident.

In Sept. 1898, Fane Tucker, a negro pauper woman, died aged 117 years of age. She was one year older than her mistress, Mrs. Sara Tucker, who died in 1873, aged ninety-one. Lem Teel, Fane’s brother who is in the poor house, is about 100 years old.
