Abstract:
Technically speaking, there are no regulated landfills operating in Orange County. However, there is an unmarked dump off Bethel Hickory Grove Church Road where people are carrying their garbage--dozens of abandoned cars, broken toilets, rusting metal drums, broken wood and sharp, rusty metal pieces, among other things. A big problem is that it is located in the \"critical\" watershed for University Lake, a 450-million-gallon reservoir west of Carrboro, and several other reservoirs that provide drinking water for over 80,000 people. Ball explores what can be done about it.

Abstract:
On February 2, a retired coal plant, operated by Duke Energy in Eden, began leaking approximately 30,000 tons of toxic coal ash into the Dan River. It was the third largest of its kind in the country's history. The river, a vital drinking source for Virginia and North Carolina towns, may have been polluted with heavy metals such as arsenic. Ball reports on a February meeting of the NC Genial Assembly's Environmental Review Commission. Among the points raised was the question--\"Who is going to pay for the cleanup?\" A complicating factor in the fallout following the spill is that Governor Pat McCrory worked thirty years for the company that caused the spill.

Abstract:
\"The North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources knew since last August (2013) that Duke Energy was illegally polluting the Dan River with coal ash, yet the agency did nothing about it.\" That proved disastrous when in February 2014 it was discovered that the ash pond at Duke Energy's Eden retired plant, was leaking 30,000-39,000 tons of coal ash and other contaminants into the river. The disaster has come under federal investigation, although the details have not been released. \"It is thought that the probe will focus on how DENR used the federal Clean Water Act to run interference for Duke Energy.\"

Abstract:
They are called LPFM, or Low Power FM stations, and they are relatively rare. They are small and can broadcast no further than 3.5 miles on 100 watts. Yet, these small frequencies on the FM dial are highly coveted. After five years of dreaming and planning, at 4 pm on Monday, February 17, 2014, Kelly Reid and Jacob Downey achieved their dream when Little Raleigh Radio (LRR) went on the air for the first time. At the moment the broadcast is online, but the ultimate aim is to have an LPFM signal. The station broadcasts local news, music and things of interest to the Raleigh community.

Abstract:
A 55-year-old sewer line near a waste-water treatment plant on the Haw River upstream from Burlington failed on January 27, 2014. By the time it was discovered and plugged two days later, 3.5 million gallons of liquid sewage had poured into the river which empties into the water supply for about 300,000 people. It is a state mandate that the public must be notified within forty-eight hours of a spill reaching state waters. Notification this time was seventy hours. Ball examines the slow notification time, why the pipe broke, and what the outcome to the break was.

The Carolina Chocolate Drops began as a group of three young musicians--Rhiannon Giddens, Justin Robinson, Dom Flemons--who were keeping alive the traditions of African American string bands of the Piedmont. However, after nine years the group isn't the same band they were, either in membership or musical choices. Giddens is the only original member that remains. Lawrence explains how the group changed.

Abstract:
Suspensions in the Durham Public Schools are disproportionately handed out to students with disabilities and minorities. According to the US Department of Education, 17 percent of those with disabilities in the system were suspended at least once during the 2009-2010 compared 8.4 percent for those without disabilities. The suspension rate is higher in secondary schools--24.3 percent. Advocates for Children's Services for Legal Aid of North Carolina has filed a complaint with the education department's Office of Civil Rights alleging that this high suspension rate discriminates against these students. The complaint is not a lawsuit. Tucker includes some steps the school system is taking to remedy the situation.

Sorg describes how Prodigal Farms in Rougemont differs from the usual goat farm. Kat Spann, an ex-lawyer, and Dave Krabble, a former builder of ultra-high homes, left their jobs to start the 95-acre farm in 2007. It is one of the area's most respected goat farms and a maker of quality cheese Because of its humane treatment of the herd, the farm has received the Animal Welfare Approval designation. There are 80 such farms in the state. One of the requirements to receive the AWA award is raising animals on pesticide-free pastures. The certification is awarded only to family farmers.

For the past nine years Raleigh Planning Director Mitchell Silver \"has been instrumental in revitalizing and redeveloping downtown Raleigh, pushing Union Station, and advocating for bikers, pedestrians, and mass transit.\" However, he is returning to his hometown of Brooklyn in May. The Mayor of New York has tapped him \"to head the city's 7,000-person parks department,\" an offer he says he cannot pass up. He says \"he is leaving behind a great team and all the 'bones' in place for Raleigh to become a great 21st century city. The keys are in the implementation of these plans and generating political will.\" Smith conducts an exit interview with Mitchell.

Abstract:
There are \"extremely high\" levels of lead and PCBs at Raleigh Metal Recycling's property. The NC Department of Environment and Natural Resources has known about the contamination for seven years; yet the DENR and the company have yet to develop a plan to clean up the contaminants which are now getting into a local stream that empties into the Neuse River and also onto an adjacent property. Violation notices were issued to the owner in March. Porter relates what progress is being made toward a cleanup plan.
