Abstract:
Paul Grainger, aged 72, was murdered in Randolph County in 2008. His wife and two of the killers accepted pleas bargains, but his daughter wanted a trial and was convicted and sentenced to life. Daughter Brandi continued to appeal and the NC Supreme Court is now deliberating her case which centers on the definition of \"constructive presence\" at a crime scene. For a first-degree murder, \"this means that a suspect must be constructively or actively present. North Carolina has defined constructive presence as being \"close enough to a crime scene to render assistance\" to the perpetrators. That, however, was written before the digital era and brings this question--\"Can someone help commit a murder from miles away, as in this case, via cellphone?\" This is the first time the NC Supreme Court has considered this question. A ruling is expected later this year.

Abstract:
The Vintage Church, an Acts 29 church in Raleigh, carries a membership of between 800 and 1,000. Currently there are sixteen Acts 29 churches in the state with five in Raleigh. It is attractive to college students and young 20- and 30-somethings who flock to the church each Sunday for the preaching and Christian-rock music. Porter examines the church teaching and finds that it has a strong anti-women stance. One thing it preaches is that the most important thing women can do is be a wife and mother. Don't have a career, don't work outside the home, and don't be single are some other teachings. Porter also found that Acts 29 churches and members identify with the right side of the political spectrum.

House Bill 589, introduced in the Republican-controlled NC General Assembly, would kill the fairness of elections in the state. Among the features are reducing early voting from 17 days to 10, eliminating same-day registration during the same period and eliminating straight party ticket voting. The bill tightens voting restrictions, but relaxes campaign finance laws.
