Skeptics view the group as a self-interested lobbyist group coupling corporation with politicians. ALEC's influence in North Carolina is linked to Republican successes within the last year.

Inside/Out is a youth led group supports LGBT, questioning, and straight students affiliated with Queer/Straight Alliances at local high schools. The group's objective is to offer a safe environment for teenagers to discuss LGBT issues, especially May's vote on the Defense of Marriage Amendment.

Post-Hurricane Irene coverage failed to report the aftermath felt by residents on northern Hatteras Island. On September 10, the area opened up to nonresident homeowners for the first time since the storm hit. Along N.C. 12 debris from ruined homes lined the road with estimates as high as 100 homes lost.

The passing of Senate Bill 514, a measure to constitutionally ban same-sex marriage, will now appear during the primary election in May instead of November, on the same ballot as the presidential election. The issue of same-sex marriage is becoming a contentious matter between parties and critics believe Republicans are using voters' emotions to garner support.

The John W. Pope Center for Higher Education Policy offered to donate funding for a selection of courses. Budget cuts to the UNC system caused UNC-Chapel Hill officials to eliminate a portion of Larry Goldberg's \"Elements of Politics\" honors class, a favored class amongst students and alumnae. A Republican led General Assembly voted for a state budget which cut Chapel Hill's funding by 17.9%, more than one hundred million.

Abstract:
A group called N.C. Family Policy Council is advocating a state constitutional amendment including the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). If approved, the amendment would make same-sex marriages illegal and homosexual partners would be denied many rights granted heterosexual couples. There is a debate if the passing of SB 106, which will appear on the ballot next spring and outlaw same-sex marriage, contradicts Article 1 of the State Constitution which declares equal rights for all citizens.

SB 106, the controversial bill addressing same-sex marriage, is receiving the majority of popular and media attention while other political matters are left under-reported. The Voter ID Bill requires voters to present a driver's license or state issued ID at polls. The Energy Jobs Act, if approved, would allow off-shore drilling and controversial fracking inland.

The bankrupt U.S. Postal Service faced an audit by the Office of the Inspector General. A report released by this agency reported 982 cases of the U.S. Postal Service paying leases on postal buildings to current or former employees, fourteen in North Carolina alone. These leases cost the Postal Service millions annually, potentially as high as $5.4 million worth of \"financial conflicts\" in these leases.

Two months after a state audit alleged Nan Coleman of siphoning $1 million from a program at North Carolina Central University, she has yet to face criminal or civil charges. Coleman is additionally being accused of skimming nearly 40 percent of $2.5 million in revenues from a federal funded tutoring program that she also oversaw for the Durham Public schools and other greater Triangle area school districts, and the Historically Minority Colleges and Universities Consortium.
