North Carolina is one of thirteen states that have hate crime laws that do not include crimes based on sexual orientation or gender identity. According to a 2004 study, sexual orientation accounted for twenty percent, or ten of sixty-six, of all reported bias-motivated criminal incidents.

A lack of access to high-speed internet service is an ongoing complaint among North Carolinians, especially in rural areas and smaller communities. Morgan discusses how Wilson, a municipality of 50,000 just east of Raleigh, is leading the way in providing faster, cheaper Internet service. Wilson's program, known as Greenlight, is installing fiber-optic-based Internet, television, and phone service to every address within the city limits.

North Carolina's high rate of fetal and neonatal mortality ranks the state in the bottom sixth of the country. Midwifery practiced without the supervision of a physician is illegal in eleven states. North Carolina stopped the practice twenty-five years ago. A House committee of the General Assembly is studying the merits of licensing independent midwives. A report is expected by the end of 2008.

Abstract:
In the last decade Tiff Merritt, who grew up in Raleigh, has gone from a regional sweetheart to a national up-and-comer. She has done a number of things including doing the late-night television circuit and releasing two records on a major label; however, the recordings sold less than 120,000 copies and the company dropped her, despite critical acclaim for her work. Merritt and companion, musician Zeke Hutchins, have moved to New York, seeking a restart to their careers.
