The story of Rhoda Bruington and her path to prison are told. Bruington was 46 when she helped her boyfriend commit armed robbery and was sentenced to 104 years in prison. The prison and justice system in North Carolina and its need for reform are also discussed.

Two Triangle area community gardens are growing crops and community. Seeds in Durham helps bring neighbors together to reclaim vacant land and create community gardens in that space. Walk Softly in Chatham County is an organization which allows small farmers to sell direct to consumer-members of the group. The goals of both groups, their histories, and their initiatives are described. Both groups highlight the Triangle area's commitment to healthful living.

Dr. Constance Battle is an OB-GYN with a practice in North Raleigh. Battle built her own practice and sees 8,000 patients and delivers up to 30 babies a month. Many women seek Battle out because she is one of a few female OB-GYNs. Oftentimes, many women want female caregivers and Battle is happy to take care of them. Battle’s practice and her patients are described.

North Carolina’s Republicans are in control of state politics but are struggling over the correct path to take. Grassroots conservatives, often motivated by moral or religious concerns, have put pressure on Republicans after their support helped them achieve many victories. Also a problem is the class barrier within the North Carolina Republican Party. This has caused pressure as the old guard or “country-club Republicans” are being forced to pay attention to the religious right, “Wal-Mart Republicans,” and grassroots Republicans.

A new bill passing through the State senate will look to limit punitive damages, otherwise known as tort reform. This will make it more difficult for individuals to hold companies accountable for defective products, unethical practices, medical malpractice, and other tort-related charges. Women discuss how they have been treated by politicians and how they sometimes fear that their careers will be ruined if they complain about sexual harassment. Dismayed by the public schools, many parents are finding an alternative in home schooling. Statewide, the number of children homeschooled in North Carolina has tripled over the last four years. Home-schooling parents say their children are excelling in an atmosphere where they work at their own pace, receive individualized attention, and are free from the distractions and bad influences of public schools. The pros and cons of homeschooling are discussed, along with stories from Triangle area parents who are homeschooling their children.

The recent merger between Glaxo and Burroughs Welcome will see hundreds of workers lose their jobs and has caused uncertainty, fear, and resentment within the new Glaxo Welcome. The unique culture of the Burroughs Welcome workplace is gone and the threat of being laid off has affected many workers’ home lives and relationships. The new Glaxo Welcome is trying to provide services to their workers to lessen anxiety, but another round of cuts will likely happen within the next two years.
