Tigertek, Inc., with headquarters in Stoneville, is BUSINESS NORTH CAROLINA magazine's 2008 North Carolina Small Business of the Year. The company began in 1983 as a repairer of all kinds of industrial equipment, and was later purchased by Peter Mitchell in 1998. The company still is an emergency responder day or night, but now it has an international reach, with repairs including advanced electronic and computer-driven equipment. It has a staff of forty-four and projects revenues in 2008 of $3.5 million.

At one time dredging by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in the state's 300 miles of Intracoastal Waterway and the six inlets that access it was a year-round project. Now reduced funding allows nature to overtake the dredging and reduce commercial and recreational travel on the waterway.

Turning House Millworks, located in Landis, and its sister company, Turning House Furniture in Bassett, Virginia, convert long-abandoned non-historic mills and factories into building materials. In so doing, the company saves thousands and thousands of trees. The company recently introduced its furniture collection made from rare and extinct vintage wood rescued from the old buildings.
