Abstract:
The Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge spreads 112,000 acres across Washington, Hyde, and Tyrrell Counties. In 1991, 17,000 degraded acres were targeted for wetland restoration to restore the pocosin's natural functions.

Abstract:
In North Carolina and around the country, the destruction of wetlands has been a topic of debate. Most recent is the conflict between development and preservation as a result of a plan which may call for the mining of thousands of wetland acres in Washington, Hyde, and Tyrrell counties.

Abstract:
The General Assembly passed a regulatory reform bill removing environmental protections from isolated wetlands that are under one acre in size. The bill will benefit coastal developers and lessen regulations for polluters. Wetlands store water, provide habitat for endangered species, and reduce flooding during tropical storms. Additional effects on wetlands are explored.
