C. D. Spangler, Jr., construction company executive and chairman of the state school board, is the new president of the sixteen-campus University of North Carolina System. He replaces William Friday who held the position for thirty years. Spangler discusses his new position, which is unique as he has no formal training as an educator or academic administrator.

Margaret Spelling is the new president of the University of North Carolina System. Spelling is facing a difficult job made more challenging by political divides and increasing tensions between fading rural communities and the fast-growing metro areas. Spelling is looking to bring a new perspective to the university system and is looking to evolve to meet the state’s rapid growth and increasingly diverse population. Spelling, her history, and the job ahead of her are detailed.

North Carolina’s constitution gives state lawmakers authority over the University of North Carolina System, but its governing board has traditionally rejected politics. The board rejecting politics may longer be normal as ties between state lawmakers and the Board of Governors have strengthened. The recent actions of the Board of Governors and their political ties and influences are examined.
