W.O. Saunders, newspaper publisher and editor of the Elizabeth City THE INDEPENDENT, was a leading advocate for identifying North Carolina as the birthplace of English civilization in America and of aviation in the world. Saunders predicted that the Outer Banks would be a tourist destination if bridges were built over the inlets. He also wrote the play “The Lost Colony,” which would be performed for years to come on Roanoke Island. During his lifetime, Saunders was never recognized for these visions. Walking the streets of Elizabeth City and New York in pajamas to protest the practice of wearing three piece suits in the summer, however, did not go unnoticed.

An Elizabeth City newspaper called The Independent was a respected both within North Carolina and nationally. The article focuses on the newspaper and it's editor, W.O. Saunders, impact on the community. His antics gained him a certain amount of infamy as well as his hard work on The Independent.

Abstract:
W. O. Saunders, late editor and publisher of the Elizabeth City Independent, was, in his time, perhaps the most widely known North Carolinian in the world. He was a crusader and a nonconformist, and his antics gained him a certain amount of infamy and many enemies. Yet his was the first newspaper to issue a special edition (now a collector's item) on outdoor privies, and he put America in slacks, dreamed up The Lost Colony pageant, promoted the Wright Memorial Bridge, and conceived the monument to the Wright Brothers at Kill Devil Hills.

North Carolina native W.O. Saunders was a defining individual during the early 20th century in North Carolina. Saunders began as the editor of the Independent, a small weekly newspaper based out of Elizabeth City, North Carolina he founded in 1908 and spent several years as a member of the North Carolina General Assembly. He spent most of his life championing progressive reform in North Carolina and the South in general.
