Carmen Wilson, a mathematics teacher at Ashe County High School, is the 2001-2002 North Carolina Teacher of the Year. Wilson will represent the state in the National Teacher of the Year competition. Other finalists were Yang Yi, of Gates County, and Marsha Cameron, of Jackson County.

Bryan Holley, a teacher at Corinth-Holders Elementary School in Johnston County, received the 2008 Milken Family Foundation Educator Award worth $25,000. Given by the Milken Family Foundation, the award recognizes outstanding K-12 educators nationwide.

James Bell, an eighth grade English teacher at Chowan Middle School, Chowan County, is the 2007 North Carolina Teacher of the Year. As Teacher of the Year, he will spend the school year traveling around the state talking with others in the education field and parents. Three other teachers who were selected as Regional Teachers of the Year will serve on the 2007-2008 Teacher of the Year Team. They are Beth Howard, a visual arts teacher at Dixon Elementary School in Onslow County; Sonya Kiser, an English teacher at North Johnston High School in Johnston County; and Shawn Watlington, a history teacher at Greensboro Middle College, in Guilford County.
