Abstract:
Back in the 1770s Surry County's main industry was agriculture. The earliest manufacturing was carried on in the home, and the earliest mills were grist mills. Industry had its real birth there in 1850 with tobacco and textiles the first manufactured products. The first circular sawmill began in 1855, and woodworking plants soon followed. Wagon and carriage factories were popular, and the world's largest granite quarry operates at Mt. Airy. The Elkin Furniture Company and three others at Mt. Airy are booming enterprises, and the Chatham Manufacturing Company is the world's largest manufacturer of woolen blankets.
