With 70,000 athletes from 150 countries participating, the 1999 Special Olympics World Summer Games, which are being held in the Research Triangle Metropolitan Area, will be the largest international sporting event ever held in the state. Before the games begin, over 130 towns across the state will host the athletes for several days to give them a taste of Southern hospitality. Greenville will host athletes from Japan.

From June 26 to July 4, 1999, the Research Triangle Metropolitan Area will host the 1999 Special Olympics World Summer Games. Seven thousand athletes 150 countries will compete in nineteen sports. North Carolina has the largest delegation, with 112 competitors.

On June 26, the 1999 Special Olympics World Summer Games open in the Research Triangle Metropolitan Area. The product of three years of planning, the games bring together 7,000 athletes for nine days of competition. Over 400,000 spectators are expected to view the events. Cost of the games is $35.5 million, and the Summer Games is the largest sporting event in the world in 1999.
