For over a year, Madison County's Mountain Park Hotel served as a makeshift compound for World War I German prisoners of war. None had actually fought against the United States; they were civilians who had worked on German and Austrian merchant ships and were interned as â€œenemy aliensâ€ when the United States entered the war on April 6, 1917.
