The Turchin Center for the Visual Arts at Appalachian State University at Boone is exhibiting until June 7 photographs that were finalists for the 11th Annual Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition. In this magazine collection are photographs that best present the Appalachian landscapes, flora, and people.

The Appalachian Barn Alliance’s project to document the historic barns of Madison County, North Carolina is often inspired by old photos of the daily activities on mountain farms. Photos show that the oldest surviving barns once had very different features and building materials, and reflected the simple building technology of the times.

The Mountain Gateway Museum in Old Fort, North Carolina has a new exhibit titled, Appalachia a Century Ago, Craft Through the Lens of William A. Barnhill. The exhibit showcases the work of photographer William Barnhill, who captured the process of making baskets from the bark of young poplar trees in the early twentieth century.

Born in Watauga County in 1884, W.R. Trivett taught himself the art and science of photography to supplement his farming income. Trivett’s photographs challenged the stereotypical views of Appalachians being poor, uneducated, and isolated. The majority of Trivett’s subjects followed popular culture and represented the truest portraits of the region.

John Foster West of Wilkes County is a writer of Appalachian folklore and folkways. West and photographer Bruce Roberts published a book of poems and photographs of life in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Selections from their book, “This Proud Land,” are presented in this article.
