Abstract:
This is a transcription of a speech made at a 1981 memorial service and opening of the James Larkin Pearson memorial Library in Wilkes. Born in 1879, James Larkin Pearson was a mountaineer from Wilkes whose poetry reflected his humble surroundings. Pearson was the poet laureate of North Carolina from 1953 until his death in 1981. The speech is given by a friend and relates anecdotes of Pearson.

James Larkin Pearson, aged 95, is North Carolina's poet laureate. In 1904, he worked for THE YELLOW JACKET, a paper out of Moravian Falls with a nation-wide circulation of 300,000. Pearson discusses his time in Washington, D.C., as a news correspondent.

North Carolina's Poet Laureate, James Larkin Pearson, at age 91, has released his latest collection of poetry, MY FINGERS AND MY TOES, which will be presented in a Publication Day Ceremony at Wilkes community College on April 25, 1971. Because of his outstanding achievements in the field of literature, Pearson received the Distinguished Citizen's Award on April 5th, and Governor Scott also proclaimed April as James Larkin Pearson Month.

Governor William B. Umstead named James Larkin Pearson of Guilford College the Poet Laureate of North Carolina on August 4, 1953. Pearson, a native of Wilkes County, has published five volumes of verse.

Moravian Falls, NC's place as a hotbed for journalism in the late 19th and early 20th century is explored. The Fool-Killer, the Lash, and the Yellow Jacket were all periodicals that appealed to a wide readership and prove that the South was anything but a static intellectual environment in the 20th century. The understanding of southern journalism these publications from Wilkes County provide is explored.
