J. Howard Coble is Governor Holshouser's Secretary of Revenue. He heads a department of approximately one thousand people who collect the revenues that enable the state government to operate. Coble is discussed in this ongoing series of brief profiles of major newly elected and appointed state officials.

Helen Powers, Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Revenue, is a Democrat who was appointed to the position by Governor James G. Martin, a Republican. Powers is the first female to hold the position of chief tax collector.
