Abstract:
The Hollow Rock String Band, consisting of Alan Jabbour, Tommy Thompson, Bobbie Thompson, and Bertram Levy, formed in Durham in the 1960s and created music based on instrumental folk music, folksong, and folklore. Jabbour was later appointed head of the Archive of Folk Song at the Library of Congress in 1969. He discusses the band's influence over the years.

Abstract:
Pierce Freelon is the bandleader of The Beast and a hip-hop artist in Durham. Freelon teamed up with Tarish Pipkins, a puppeteer known as Jeghetto, to recreate the classic Pinocchio tale using Afro-futurist hip hop opera and marionettes. Their production premiered at Duke’s Nasher Museum of Art.

Abstract:
The Beast is a jazz and hip-hop band in Durham, whose existence has been built on message songs. Their new record, Woke, is based on a term meaning to be socially conscious to the injustices committed against oppressed people. The record addresses the abuse of people of color in the name of progress.
