"Creative approaches are required to sustain the states once-dynamic regional malls." The last regional mall built in North Carolina was Northlake Mall in Charlotte in 2005. Existing mall operations are turning to adding housing, restaurants and medical facilities. Major owners of North Carolina Malls are CBL Properties, Brookfield Properties and Simon Property Group.

"This spring the city begins work on a 4.5 acre urban park on the old Eastland Mall site, in one of Charlotte's most diverse areas. the park, designed for the future, will also nod to a once-glorious past." Amid a nationwide boom for shopping malls, planning for the former Eastland Mall began in 1969. Charlotte's first mall, Charlottetowne Mall, opened in 1959, followed by SouthPark in 1970. The two entities eclipsed Charlotte's traditional shopping district on Trade and Tryon Streets. A significant feature of Eastland Mall was its indoor Ice skating rink.
