Situated on Balls Creek near Catawba, Murray's Mill is one of the largest and best preserved of the state's remaining water-powered gristmills. Built in 1912-13, the mill is now owned by the Catawba County Historical Association.
The Barringer House, located in Catawba County, is one of the oldest houses in North Carolina. Menzies discusses the interesting history attached to the house, which was built by Matthias Barringer in 1762.
In the 1960s, Robert Hart, a Hickory physician and preservationist, purchased 200 acres outside the city limits. There he collected ninety-two buildings from Catawba and surrounding counties and created a place that imitates village life. With the help of his wife, he decorates the buildings with furniture from the time period in which they were built.
