Abstract:
Students in North Carolina's public schools are openly identifying themselves as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender with some of them are reporting harassment from some of their peers to school officials. The article discusses some of the federal and state decisions from other jurisdictions that North Carolina courts are likely to consider if called upon to analyze the potential liability of school boards or employees for peer harassment of gay students. Measures that North Carolina school boards can implement to prevent this form of harassment are included. To date, no cases of this type have come before North Carolina's courts.

Headlines about queer youth often highlight stories of bullying and teen suicide. However, there are positive stories of teens coming out earlier and creating Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs) and a sense of community pride amongst their allies. Included in this piece are testimonials from nine North Carolinian teenagers.

The formation of the Gay-Straight Alliance at A.L. Stanbuck Middle School is the first of its kind in a middle school in Orange County. The club was initially prevented from forming by the principal, but two years after first trying, the club is now active. Several students describe the discrimination they face, their struggle to form the club, and how the club has helped the LGBTQ community of students.
