From May 16-26, Fayetteville hosts North Carolina’s largest festival this year to commemorate the centennial of the Wright Brothers flight at Kitty Hawk in 1903. The festival features a weekend arts festival, a military air show, a general aviation show, an aviation exposition, and hot air balloons. There will also be celebrity speakers, including Cheri White, a world record hot air balloon pilot from North Carolina.

The Fly-In and Threshers Reunion is a three-day annual event held at Denton International Airport in Southern Davidson County. The event started in 1970, when Brown Loflin and other community leaders invited airplanes to come in and offer free rides as a fundraiser for the Denton County rescue squad. Since then, the event has expanded to feature a variety of attractions and machinery, such as a wheat threshing machine, locomotives, an operating moonshine sill, and hundreds of exhibitors.

The Flora MacDonald Highland Games celebrates Scotland traditions in the Shannon County community of Red Springs, October 7-8. The Games include competitions in Highland music, dance, and athletics, as well as Revolutionary War re-enactments, arts and crafts. The event was named for Flora MacDonald, a loyal Scotswoman who rallied Scotsmen in the Carolinas against the Patriots during the Revolutionary War.

The Pooletown Volunteer Fire Department “Threshers Reunion” was held on the Baxter Ribelin farm outside of Salisbury, North Carolina. The two-day festival featured hundreds of antiques and farm equipment showing the dramatic progress that has taken place on the farm in this century. The festival also helps to raise money for the volunteer fire department.

Since 1967, the North Carolina Blueberry Industry has been sponsoring a blueberry festival the third week in May in the Elizabethtown-White Lake area. The Seventh Annual Blueberry Festival, ranked second in size for festivals in North Carolina, will be held May 15-20. The world’s largest black bears and highest black bear densities are found on the Albemarle-Pamlico Peninsula of eastern North Carolina. The historic waterfront community of Plymouth is building its brand on the black bear. One popular event is the Fourth Annual North Carolina Black Bear Festival on June 2-3, 2018.

An important part of childhood, to the author, was rides on a carousel. For Perry, its appeal could be defined in the thrill of the spin and the sound of the calliope. As illustration for its timeless appeal was a description and photo of a three row menagerie carousel in Burlington. As for its timely appeal, that was acknowledged in its being one of just two dozen remaining in American built by Gustav A. Dentzel.
