Many of the major problems facing graduate students of the 1970s was the shift from certain disciplines to others, and a focus on research, development, and teaching of these disciplines. Glenny discusses the difficulties in planning graduate education including costs, quality, output, and jobs.

Three students have received fellowships dealing with costal policy and coastal research. They will conduct projects to complete their fellowships. Fellowships are provided by the North Carolina Sea Grant. They will conduct their research on the North Carolina Coast.

East Carolina University has moved up in the ranks of higher education as the UNC Board of Governors approved ECU’s classification as a doctoral institution. Graduate education has grown throughout the 1990s with new doctoral programs in Coastal Resources Management, Communication Sciences and Disorders, and Medical Biophysics.
