Abstract:
The seven community service learning centers associated with East Carolina University’s School of Dental Medicine, such as the profiled facility in Ahoskie, have a two-fold mission. They strive to provide innovative care, with a focus on underserved populations living in rural areas, and offer excellent hands-on training to its students. The necessity of this service and enormity of its impact are revealed in statistics and description of the program that prepares students for their service.
Abstract:
Many North Carolinians have faced the challenge of receiving dental care, because of a lack of affordability or low availability of dentists. In response to these challenges, East Carolina University established a School of Dental Medicine in 2011. Helping to overcome the challenge of affordability is a patient fund program. Helping to overcome the challenge of accessibility are eight community learning centers and ECU SoDM students who practice in state post-graduation.
