At the Wilmington airport on February 20, 1948, Piedmont Airlines founder Tom Davis watched the first flight of his fledgling airline take off. Davis was almost 30, and his airline consisted of three used DC-3 airplanes and 250 employees. Forty years later Piedmont was one of the nation's largest airlines before its acquisition and merger with USAir in the late 1980s.

Tom Davis founded Piedmont Airlines in 1948. When he retired in 1983, the Winston-Salem-based airline was known \"for safety, customer service, and a family atmosphere among its workers.\" Piedmont was one of the nation's largest airlines before its acquisition and merger with USAir in the late 1980s.

At the Wilmington airport on February 20, 1948, a Douglas DC-3, carrying a few passengers, took off for Cincinnati. It was the first flight for Piedmont Airlines, founded by Tom Davis of Winston-Salem. The airline carried around 40,000 passengers the first year. Growth over the succeeding years brought the number to over one million. Britt discusses the rise of this local airline.

Abstract:
Tom Davis of Winston-Salem founded Piedmont Airlines in 1948. Today the airline operates over forty jet and propjet airliners which carried more than 2.8 million passengers in 1971 between destinations in ten states and the District of Columbia. Davis is featured in this month's WE THE PEOPLE MAGAZINE's North Carolina Businessman in the News.

Thomas H. Davis is the president and founder of the Piedmont Aviation Inc., North Carolina's only airline. Davis, a Winston-Salem native, learned to fly in high school and proceeded to make money teaching others to fly through his college years. After graduation he created Piedmont Aviation, which flies cargo and passengers planes through service routes in North Carolina. In 1962, Davis received permission to service flights from Atlanta to Raleigh.

Abstract:
The North Carolina Citizens Association presented its Citation for Distinguished Citizenship to Thomas H. Davis at its annual meeting. Davis is the founder of Piedmont Airlines.
