Abstract:

Smithfield and surrounding towns light over 22,000 candles each December 24th in the annual Christmas Eve Luminaria. Luminaries first originated in Spain and Mexico where tiny bonfires were used. The first Luminaria in Smithfield was organized in 1973 by the West Smithfield Community Development Organization.
