What bearing does car cell phone conversation have on traffic safety? Some states feel a great deal. In 2001, 43 states considered bills to ban or regulate phone use while driving. A study by the Highway Safety Research Center at UNC-CH found \"cell phone conversation to be the eighth most likely cause of accidents blamed on driver distraction.\" The North Carolina General Assembly has established a committee \"to examine proposals to require the use of speakerphones and headsets and report to the 2003 General Assembly.\"

Asheville’s Council on Aging offers services allowing elderly people on fixed incomes to live independently and economically in their own residences. The nonprofit organization provides services free of charge such as minor household repairs; Call-a-Ride, for those unable to drive or access public transportation; 911 Emergency Cell Phones, for at-risk seniors; In-Home Aide Services, to assist with completing daily tasks; Heat Relief, which provides fans and air conditioners during the summer. Funds and labor are provided primarily through the support of volunteers and donations from individuals.

Being personally impacted by skyrocketing wireless plans prices inspired David Morken to found Republic Wireless. His Raleigh based company offered features for Republic customers such as wi-fi calling. Android phone customers could also access Republic’s wi-fi feature by purchasing the SIM card that allows download of the company’s app.
