The Tar-Pamlico River is one of the more popular destinations for kayakers and canoers in eastern North Carolina, and in Edgecombe County a dedicated group of volunteers is helping maintain a network of camping platforms for paddlers. The platforms are part of the Tar Pamlico Water Trail, a network of camping sites owned and operated by Sound Rivers, a non-profit organization in Washington, North Carolina.

FLS Energy, a solar energy company, joined the ranks of other privately owned businesses with bright economic and occupational futures in North Carolina. Among the other 99 companies highlighted were Ennis-Flint, Rodgers Builders, Camco, Hissho Sushi, and Allen Industries. Factors these businesses often held in common included employees retaining majority ownership, being family owned, and starting with a single product.

Four Paws Kingdom, just outside Rutherfordton, North Carolina, is a campground that welcomes dog owners and their pets with weekend festivities and amenities such as biscuit treats, champion-sized dog agility rings, an off-leash swimming pond, fenced dog parks and a custom-designed doggy bathhouse. Owned by Meik and Birgit Bartoschek, Four Paws is the first and only dog-dedicated campground in the United States.

About two years ago, Bill Smithwick quit his off-farm job and began developing a portion of his farm on the shores of the Pungo River into a recreation area. The area was transformed into the Riverside Campground, and it is now a thriving and growing business endeavor. The campground provides visitors with the opportunity for camping, boating, fishing and kite skiing.
