Pelagic birders and fishermen have uncovered secrets in the swirling waters of the Gulf Stream off North Carolina's coast: they have exposed a global community of an astonishing accumulation of species of aquatic birds cruising about or floating in the waves.

The combination of an oil spill and a harsh storm at Nags Head spelled death for several species of water birds in the area. The birds became helpless when they were washed ashore, unable to take flight from the water due to being covered in oil.
