Abstract:
In 1962 Wilber Shirley bought the former Hill's Barbecue in Goldsboro and opened it under his own name. He has prepared barbecue the traditional way for the past fifty years--cooking whole hogs entirely over hardwood coals. Wilber's is one of the few places left that prepare barbecue this way, and in the eastern part of the state, Wilber's is one of the biggest names.

Randy McCall and Worth Westbrook have operated McCall's Bar-B-Cue & Seafood in Goldsboro for the past twenty-five years. Quality bar-b-cue is done on a big scale at this restaurant. Nickens recounts how the men came to the bar-b-cue business and how the place operates.

Abstract:
"For many a trip to the beach isn't the same without a detour through Wayne County to one of North Carolina's iconic barbecue restaurants." The restaurant has served president, governors and numerous beach-bound travelers. Wilberdean Shirley opened the restaurant in Goldsboro on Highway 70 in 1962. It closed 2019, a couple of years after Shirley's death but was reopened in soon after by a group of men with ties to Goldsboro. Leading this group is Willis B. Underwood III.
