Paul DiPasquale’s work will be featured in the Contemporary Gallery this spring. DiPasquale’s sculpts seven to nine foot human figures and the sculptures are typically display in public locations. DiPasquale’s figures often defy cultural norms or conceptions and contain an element of humor.

The new exhibit Howard Pyle and The Wyeths: Four Generations of American Imagination places the art of artists, Howard Pyle, N.C. Wyeth, Andrew Wyeth, and Jamie Wyeth. The exhibition explores the impact Pyle had on three generations of Wyeth’s as N.C. Wyeth’s teacher. From the Brandywine School, the four artists are connected by the narrative quality of their work. A description of the four artists’ work and their impact on each other and viewers is discussed in a preview to the exhibition.

Abstract:
The North Carolina Gallery will feature the art of Nam June Paik this spring and summer. Paik invented the use of television as an art form. His work features a device which mixes images recorded by the camera lens with programmed electronic signals. The exhibition also shows a 1982 video tape of poet Allen Ginsberg and Allan Kaprow talking about their relationships with their fathers.

This summer, the Museum will present a comprehensive exhibition from the twentieth-century decorative arts collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. Created between 1900 and 1940 the objects show how various artists responded to the innovations of technology. The exhibition offers works of furniture, metalwork, glass, and ceramics that showcase the Arts and Crafts movement, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and Art Moderne periods.

The work of American artist Philip Guston will be exhibited in the Contemporary Gallery this summer. Guston is considered one of the most important painters from the 1970s. 16 paintings from that period will be on display. Guston’s work helped to reinvigorate the tradition of oil painting and the use of symbolism to comment on mankind’s philosophical concerns.

Seven prints from Georges Rouault’s Miserere series are being exhibited in the Twentieth Century Gallery this summer. The paintings portray the sufferings and hopes of the modern man. Rouault is known for his skills as a printmaker and painter and as one of the most significant religious painters of the twentieth century. Rouault’s biography, his artistic style, and the religious symbolism in his work are detailed.

The self-portraits of Viennese artist Arnulf Rainer will be exhibited in the Contemporary Gallery this winter. This will be the first solo exhibition of Rainer’s work in North America. Rainer’s portraits have been altered after they were drawn on by the artists creating extreme emotional images. Rainer’s work is often described as disturbing or violent due to the distorted images.

An exhibition by draftsman and painter Rico Lebrun will be on display through November in the Twentieth Century Gallery. Lebrun has been little studied since his death in 1964, but a recent revival of interest in figurative art, religious content, and expressionist paint handling has brought him back to the spotlight. Lebrun’s work often featured themes such as man’s inhumanity and man’s sacrifice. The work and the artists are described in preview of the exhibition curated from the Museum's permanent collection.

Four of the featured artists of Estampas de la raza are interviewed about the challenges they face in creating their art, how their cultural background affects their work, and how Estampas continues to influence them. Vincent Valdez, Oscar Magallanes, Ceasr Martinez, and Sonia Romero are all interviewed. The four artists all contributed prints to the exhibition and discuss how being Latino has affected their work and perspective. The exhibition highlights contemporary prints created by Latino and Hispanic artists.

The Museum recently acquired six new works of art and is opening a new video gallery in the East Building. Giovanni Martinelli’s Memento Mori: Death Comes to the Table circa 1630-38, Yink Shonibare’s, MBE Wind Sculpture II 2013, Flemish, Antwerp School’s Saint Jerome in His Study circa 1560-70, Hieronymus Mittnacht’s Torah Shield 1747-49 are four of the works that were acquired. The artist of each work, an illustration of the work, and a description of the subject and style are detailed. A preview of the upcoming exhibits in the new video gallery is also included and will feature the work of James Nares.

The exhibition Edvard Munch: Symbolism in Print is currently on display and focuses on the idea of death in sex. Munch believed that in love, individuals lost their personal identities and this idea is seen in this collection of prints. His complicated prints of relationships and feelings between men and women often convey anguish, despair, lust, and passion. Munch’s personal experiences and a preview of the exhibition are detailed.

The Museum will display the work of Norman Rockwell in an upcoming exhibition. 40 original paintings and 323 Saturday Evening Post covers will be on display. Rockwell was influential in shaping the nation’s self-image during the twentieth-century through his illustrations in media publications. Rockwell’s art is noted for its humor and portrayal of everyday life. Rockwell’s style and criticism of his work are discussed in this preview of the exhibition.

The exhibition Far from Home features work by artists of diverse national, cultural, and spiritual backgrounds. The exhibit also includes works of art that address the displacement of people and populations in the global community as they relocate for economic, political, education, or familial reasons. All of the artists featured have relocated and their art often reflects this event and the distance they feel from their homes. The exhibit explores how being displaced affects creativity and one’s identity.
