On January 23, 1866, the North Carolina General Assembly passed a resolution asking Governor Jonathan Worth â€œto make a contract with some manufacturer of artificial limbs to supply the needs of the State at an early date.â€ The act was to provide artificial limbs for the State's maimed veterans of the Civil War. Wegner, who works in the Research Branch of the Office of Archives and History, discusses her research and how her planned article led to a book on the subject.
