Abstract:
"Nearly 50 years ago, the city erupted over the production of an ward-winning play about gay men and AIDS. The battle set a rigid mold for Charlotte's approach to the performing arts. We haven't broken it yet." For years after "Angels" appeared, Charlotte arts funding operated on the principal that if they didn't like a production connected with gay or left-centered themes they wouldn't fund it. This was backed by a voting bloc on the Charlotte city council known as the "Gang of Five".
