After Senator Ben Sumner of Rutherford called for more honest reporting in Raleigh, newspapermen began asking if the profession should not look into these charges to determine their validity. Sometime later, the Raleigh News & Observer was accused of quoting out of context, and factual errors. In addition to newspapermen, several women, editors, and owners of local newspapers, began researching the accusations.

Reporting on the most censored and underreported news stories of the year, The Independent believes the change of the area’s newspapers is that story. The News & Observer of Raleigh and The Durham Morning Herald of Durham have each undergone changes which readers may be unaware of. The N&O is under new leadership and has amassed a significant debt in its attempt to remain independently-owned. The Herald has cut jobs, streamlined the look of their paper, and added a new daily. Questions are many about the two papers and the future ahead, but both are likely to succeed in the eyes of this author.

North Carolina State University’s Chancellor Bruce Poulton has resigned after The News & Observer and the NCAA found that the university was not holding athletes to the same academic standards as other students. Poulton is blaming his resignation on Raleigh’s newspaper for targeting him. While some agree, internal NCSU memos and Poulton’s actions suggest a conflict of interest. The money and power associated with a successful sports program seems to have caused Poulton to allow the rules and academic standards to be ignored for athletes.

The newspaper and print industry is facing a financial crisis. Print advertising revenues are declining and the economy is slowing which is causing many newspapers to lay off staff. Raleigh’s newspaper, The News & Observer, is facing the same problem and is likely to lay off employees. Smaller staffs will struggle to cover the area’s news as they did before.
