The perception of college cheerleaders tends to focus on female sexuality rather than athleticism. While cheerleaders at Duke University and North Carolina State University maintain the feminine uniforms, they are highly talented athletes who go through intense training programs. Male cheerleaders are also discriminated against, and Duke no longer allows them to participate in the sport.

The Wake County Board of Commissioners received a report from a 2016 Wake County Commission for Women study on women's employment issues. The results show major gender-based wage gaps among employees in Wake County.

The number of women golfers is increasing statewide. However, a survey of fourteen women members of the NORTH CAROLINA magazine Golf Panel indicates that a number of women do not feel welcome at golf clubs. They find it difficult in getting a Saturday tee time and in getting a sandwich in the \"men's\" grill. Locker rooms are not always equal to men's, and awkward red tee placements make it difficult to reach the greens without going into front bunkers.

An initiative to address discrimination against women in regional theater provoked a discrimination complaint with the city of Raleigh and a request to defund a theater company that receives city funds. As a result, one company has already distanced itself from the initiative, which had the best of intentions in attempting to mitigate a longtime injustice.
