In 1905, Lunsford Richardson, a Greensboro druggist, went into business to sell his own medicines. One of his connections, Vicks VapoRub, has been known around the world for over one hundred years. How the name came to be is a mystery, although there are theories. What is known, Tomlin writes is that \"he created a medicinal marvel for the ages, the like of which may never be equaled.\"

Abstract:
Lunsford Richardson II, a native of Johnston County, invented Vicks Vapo-Rub. He taught school before becoming a pharmacist. His first drugstore was in Selma, which he sold before moving to Greensboro, where he opened another one. There he developed a number of home remedies under the name of Vicks. His most famous product was Vicks VapoRub, a balm which contained menthol, a little-known drug from Japan. Ninety years after his death, Vicks VapoRub is known around the world and continues to relieve the discomfort of sick people.

Abstract:
In 1905, Lunsford Richardson, a Greensboro druggist, went into business to sell his own medicines. He called his company Vick Family Remedies Company; in 1960, the name was changed to Richardson-Merrell, Inc. Under Richardson, and later his son Smith, the company expanded to eleven U.S. and eighteen foreign plants of a $340 million enterprise.

Vicks VapoRub was a pioneer in 1894, born and bred in North Carolina and quickly spread across the country and the world. Created in Greensboro, North Carolina by Lunsford Richardson, VapoRub is distributed by the Vick Manufacturing Division of Richardson-Merrell Inc., and has become the world's leading relief of colds. The Vick Manufacturing Division is one of twelve major divisions of the enterprise that focuses on ethical pharmaceutical drugs prescribed by physicians; proprietary drugs as advertised for the public; veterinary drugs for animal health and productivity; and chemicals and plastics packaging.
