Abstract:
The state-wide smoking ban in restaurants and bars is proving difficult to enforce. The Legislature gave no money for enforcement and the NC Division of Public Health does not have the manpower to enforce the law. Currently, citizens and business owners are the ones enforcing the law. A look at how the counties in the Triangle area will attempt to enforce the ban with their budgets is explored.

In 2008, Ken Burkel and other members of the Clemmons Rotary Club in Forsyth County launched a program to heighten public awareness for the need for organ and tissue donors in North Carolina. The program created roadside billboards and recently partnered with the North Carolina Trucking Association to display custom banners of organ recipients and donor families.

Educate Our Women, an outreach program of Wake County Human Services, uses Latino lay advisors to provide Latino women information about breast cancer prevention. Sessions are informal and appeal to those intimidated by medical settings.
