Contributions given to those running for the US House District 2 seat, US House District 4 seat, NC District 34 seat, NC District 35 seat, and NC District 41 seat are detailed. The total cash raised, total cash spent, cash on hand, and the top three sectors contributing to each candidate’s campaign are detailed.

A hearing last week revealed some of the corruption in North Carolina’s politics and within former Governor Mike Easley’s campaigns. The State Board of Elections fined Easley 100,000 for failing to report contributions and made a criminal referral to Wake County District Attorney for Easley’s false billing of campaign funds. Corruption and the influence of wealthy private citizens on politics in North Carolina are revealed in-depth. Easley’s campaign contributions are also the subject of a FBI investigation.

Abstract:
A panel of three federal judges will meet to determine if North Carolina’s May 6 primary will be held. A lawsuit was recently filed asking for a delay so the courts or legislature can redraw the state’s legislative district boundaries. Redrawing the lines could allow for more Republicans to win elections and the disenfranchisement of black voters by diluting their political power.

After a year in court, the Green and Libertarian parties are still fighting over the process for being listed as a third party on the ballot. The court case has been sent to trial and it will start in March. The parities sued the State Board of Elections saying the state’s ballot access laws were unconstitutional. The specifics of how a party gets listed on the ballot and the arguments of the two parties and the state are detailed.

There is a grassroots movement in North Carolina in support of presidential nominee Barrack Obama. NC residents are supporting the nominee by making buttons, t-shirts, and more to spread support. A voluntary system of public financing is available for the first time to candidates for three of the Council of State offices. Part of a pilot program, public funding for these offices may not last beyond this year, but it is helping candidates run for office and reducing the influence special interests have on candidates. Candidates discuss the benefits of the program and how it has allowed them to run for office.

John Verdejo is delegate who is representing North Carolina's 13th Congressional District at the Democratic National Convention. Verdejo speaks about his background and why he is excited about Barack Obama’s potential presidency. Verdejo is a Latino who represents an emerging generation of political activists who grew up under Presidents Reagan and Bush Sr. and witnessed cuts in domestic programs and widening economic disparities. Verdejo also takes to heart the community-empowerment message at the root of Obama's success and Verdejo represents many who are excited by Obama’s campaign.

One of President Barack Obama’c campaign advisors John Verdejo describes his reaction to Obama’s victory in 2008 presidential election. Verdejo was one of North Carolina’s three whips at the Democratic National Convention. Verdejo describes how Obama is a role model for young people and how he gives everyone hope, especially African-Americans.

North Carolina Democratic Governor Mike Easley is popular because he rarely addresses tough issues and is not visible to the public. Easley is not the leader North Carolina needs and has done little to address corruption, the public financing of elections, transportation, the tax system, environmental issues, the mental health crisis, or the prison crisis. The only real work Easley has done is with education, but his plan lacks ambition and fails to serve those who need help the most.

Abstract:
North Carolina ranked fourth in the nation in increases of global warming pollution from 1990-2004. Clean energy legislation is currently working to address the issue, but most of the discussion about the problem and solutions are a mystery. The Energy Issues Working Group is responsible for meeting and discussing the bill, but its meetings are not well publicized and the chairman of the group wants to keep it that way. Some of the changes proposed in a senate bill to address the clean energy problem and plan are detailed and members comment on the groups meeting process.

John Edwards is competing for the democratic nomination for president. Edwards’ message is strong, but his campaign seems to be stuck. One of Edwards’ main campaign themes has been anti-poverty, but he has been called a hypocrite for his massive 28,000-square-foot house near Chapel Hill. While many like Edwards, critics point out that his lack of political insight may be costing him. Edwards’ struggles and his chances of winning are discussed.

12 Legislators discuss a bill that would prohibit the teaching or discussion of information that promotes sexual practices that are not lawful in North Carolina. All 12 support the bill and were asked whether they committed a felony under the bill they currently support. When asked, most became angry and said sex was a private matter. The bill would make sex and sex education a public issue.

Sixteen months after IndyWeek requested Governor Pat McCrory’s travel records, six months of records were provided by McCrory’s office. McCrory has promised a transparent, ethical, and accountable government, but that does not seem to be reality. The travel records requested are incomplete, but the ones provided are printed in a chart with the date traveled, the destination, the cost of the trip, and the reason for travel.
