The Independent talked to activists throughout the Research Triangle Metropolitan Area and asked them to identify the ten important social justice campaigns needing citizen involvement in 2000. Among those identified were campaign finance reform, support for farmworkers, and a halt to the death penalty. O'Neill gives a brief description of each campaign and lists contact persons and phone numbers.

Amanda Arrington is the winner of a 2008 Indy Citizen Award for positively impacting her community. Arrington is the director of the Coalition to Unchain Dogs to free dogs from their tethers by building fences around their yards. The group builds fences for pet owners who can’t afford them if the owners first agree to get their dog spayed or neutered.

Ray Eurquhart is the winner of a 2009 Indy Citizen Award for improving his community. Eurquhart is a Durham resident and community activist who is working to clean up crime, replenish affordable housing, and restore life to the Rolling Hills and Southside neighborhoods of Durham. Known as “Brother Ray,” Eurquhart helped found the Southside Community Outreach Center, applies for grants for the neighborhood association, created summer programs for schoolchildren in the neighborhood, and more to help the struggling community.

Foster is currently advocating for health care reform through his Billionaires for Wealth Care sketch. The sketch and his group have been featured on national tv as they make fun of billionaires afraid of losing their wealth through taxes to support health care reform.

The FBI is interested in individuals participating in the anti-war movement. Durham resident Kosta Harlan was one of many anti-war and international peace activists recently targeted during raids by the FBI. All of the targets have two things in common: they oppose the wars in the Middle East and are critical of US foreign policy regarding Colombia and Palestine. Area experts discuss the current raids and the government’s reasons for carrying them out.

Mabry’s goal is to fight for the rights of workers to have safe, healthy workplaces. She recently created the Injured Workers’ Network to provide a source of solidarity and support for people who have been hurt on the job.

On July 1st, Reverend William Barber was in attendance and spoke to the crowd about recent Republican changes to voting rights after the U.S. Supreme Court's decision concerning the Voting Rights Act (1965).

On July 1st, protestors rallied once again for the ninth \"Moral Monday\" to challenge Republican leadership in the state government. Dana Cope, Director of the State Employees Union (SEANC), expressed frustration with the July 1 demonstrators. He turned to social media to lambast protestors and say they are just creating a spectacle rather than making any strong political change.

Internationalist Bookstore owner and Triangle area activist Bob Sheldon was recently murdered. Over 400 people attended his viewing and told of his impact on the community. His murder has not been solved and the State Board of Investigation is assisting with the case. Local activists speculate if Sheldon was killed in opposition to the Persian Gulf War. The war is less than a day old and Sheldon was a peace activist and had experienced opposition to his beliefs.

The new breed of liberal campus activist is being labeled “PC” for their political correctness. The media and conservative individuals oppose the activists for their “politics of difference.” Women, black, gay, and other liberal minority students say the system has excluded them for so long that they only way they can get equality is by magnifying their differences and demanding more than other groups. Some intimidation of activists has occurred on Duke’s and UNC’s campuses, but students are committed to fighting the status quo.
