This article features Sharon Slade a retired educator. She began her teaching career at Mattamuskeet High School in Swan Quarter, Hyde County. She taught several classes such as Family Consumer Science, Information Highway, Occupational Exploration, Foods 1 and 2, Teen Living, Parenting and Child Development, Interior Design and Biotechnology. She also fluctuated between CTE classes and managing Child Nutrition at the school's cafeteria. Even after retiring, she still does substitute teaching at Mattamuskeet Early College High School.

This article is a wonderful feature on Helga Frieda Erna Jarvis, 83, a native of Chile, and a resident of Hyde County for nearly fifty years. The article talks of her unique life in Valparaiso, Chile, how both WWI and WWII affected her German-Chilean family in Chile; and her meeting and marrying a Navy man named Foster Linwood Jarvis of Rose Bay, Hyde County, NC. Her husband died in 1993 and she teaches, gives presentations and shares her German-Chilean cultural experiences and her talent as a multi-lingual speaker in different ways.
