Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company (PPG) opened its latest fiber glass plant at Shelby in 1959. The PPG Carolina plant is the world's largest producer of fiber glass yarn employing the direct melt system exclusively. The plant is designed for twenty-four melting furnaces.
