The High Point Market is the world’s largest home furnishing show bringing in 5.4 billion dollars in economic impact to the state. Over 75, 000 people will attend this year’s show and more than 2, 000 vendors will sell their goods. The influence of cheaper furniture from China, online shopping, competition from other cities, and the effects of House Bill 2 are having negative effects on the market. Despite problems, the show still goes on and provides a unique experience for market attendees.

Furniture manufacturing began in High Point in the late 1880s. The High Point Furniture Manufacturing Company was the first to ship furniture beyond the city, though soon other furniture manufacturers, attracted by a good supply of lumber and a strong regional market for inexpensive furniture, opened for business. High Point hosted the first Southern Regional Market in 1909. From this date, the shows evolved into the International Home Furnishings Market, a semi-annual furniture event.

The world's largest furniture marketplace happens twice a year in High Point. The furniture shows take place in High Point because that was once where the industry was centered. Now, the High Point market's future is in jeopardy and Las Vegas thinks it has the answer: building a new home for the market and leveraging its advantages in entertainment accommodations, restaurants, and glamour.

Lea and Company in Richmond, Virginia. He assumed his present positions in 1981 and 1982. Hunziker is profiled in NORTH CAROLINA magazine's “executive profile.â€

In 1895 in High Point, A. O. Redding began making household furniture under the name of Alma Furniture Company. In 1904, Charles E. Hayworth, at age twenty-two, founded the Hayworth Roll and Panel Company which was located next door to the Alma Furniture. When Redding died in 1921, Hayworth purchased Alma at auction. Today he is president of Alma Desk Company and other companies that comprise Hayworth Industries.

Leo J. Heer has been managing director of the Southern Furniture Exhibition Building in High Point for nineteen years, starting in 1953. Prior to this he had worked for the National Retail Furniture Association since 1938 as editor of the National Furniture Review and as director of the merchandising division. Heer will retire from his present position on November 1, 1972.

Today, the company has a 100,000 square foot space to create and quality products bought by thousands of dealers. President of Globe, Mr. Henry Foscue, has been at the helm for over 15 years and is also a tireless civic leader for the state.

This history of furniture making in High Point tracks the development of the industry in this area, the furniture center of the South. Four factors are identified as key to High Point's success and expounded upon by the author: its proximity to then undepleted stands of excellent heartwoods, its favorable climate, excellent water power, and that it had plentiful, cheap, and dependable labor from surrounding rural areas.
