Hickory Chair Furniture Co.makes 90 percent of its furniture in Hickory. the company is part of the Shuford family's parent company Rock House Farm. There are over 36,000 worker in the state's furniture industry.

The town’s prosperity rests to an extent on an industry part of its foundation since the late 1800s: furniture. Attesting its enduring importance is furniture companies such as Hickory Furniture Mart and individuals such as Alex Shuford III, whose great grandfather founded Century Furniture. Filling the occupational gap left by furniture companies outsourced include industries such as transportation, which have helped to recuperate the economy. From this, city leaders are hopeful that younger generations such Millennials will continue to live and work in Hickory.

Despite not making the final bid as site for Amazon’s second US headquarters, the city of Hickory can claim fulfillment of its economic promise. Fulfillment of its promise is in industries such as furniture, which can measure success in 60% of furniture sold in the United States connected to the area. Success on a global scale can be measured in Hickory Furniture Mart’s attracting visitors from Asia, the Middle East, and Europe and drawing 500,000 visits annually.

Lynn Mull Lail, of Hickory, is featured in NORTH CAROLINA magazine executive profile. As a teenager, she worked in the family motel, learning information about business and tourism. She inherited the Mull Motel and the Hickory Furniture Mart from her parents, Pearlie and Maude Mull. At the time, the furniture mart was a wholesale business and was open only two days a year, during nearby High Point's Furniture Market. In 1985, she and her husband opened the Hickory Furniture Mart to the public year-round. The mart is now the area's biggest tourist attraction and one of the state's top visitor destinations, attracting over 500,000 people every year. The million-square-foot complex displays over 1,000 furniture lines and includes 100 factory outlets, stores and galleries, shipping service, visitor center, museum, cafe, coffeehouse, and motel.
