"Wilmington's new endowment encounters growing pains as it seeks 'transformational change'". The New Hanover Community Endowment was created with $1.25 million in proceeds from the county's sale of the 800 bed New Hanover Regional Medical Center to Novant Health in 2021. It one of the largest community-building nonprofits in North Carolina history. Focus of the endowment is social and health equity, community development and safety.

"New Hanover County sold its hospital for peak value, creating a rare chance to better the community. Dan Winslow is at the helm. Talk abut a great gig: Dan Winslow's job is to help a $1.6 billion endowment eventually give away $80 million a year or more for worthy causes in an area totaling about 242,000 people. Formed by the sale of the Wilmington area's main hospital in 2021,the New Hanover Community Endowmwnt instantly became maoung the state's largest nonprofit charitable organizations."
